Dawn Chorus in Southwest Ohio

Over Memorial Day weekend 2025, my wife and I stayed in the guest house at the Murphin Ridge Inn, a bed and breakfast 13 miles due north of the Ohio River as the crow flies. Below, hear the dawn chorus in southwest Ohio captured on May 26 starting at a little before 6 a.m.

Birdsong includes, according to my Merlin Bird ID iPhone app, some of the following: Cedar Waxwing, Mourning Dove, Eastern Phoebe, American Robin, Wood Thrush and American Crow. A deer stomps its hoof and snorts for good measure.

Where I live in northeast Ohio, it’s incredibly difficult to get away from the noise pollution of vehicle traffic, jet planes and lawn mowers. I was hoping that down here, I might get a break from that. As pretty as the morning scene appeared before my sleepy eyes, that was not the case. Route 41, a two-lane road, lies less than a mile away and large truck traffic was ever present. Had I thought about that harder, I probably would have slept in, but then I would have missed a beautiful sunrise.

Nevertheless, I present it hear as a reminder to myself and my wife of the pleasant morning it was. Plus, we shared a breakfast shortly after that was superb.
